EDITORS' RANKING 2026: STILL HIDING YOUR CREPEY ARMS UNDER A CARDIGAN IN JULY? SEE WHAT CAME OUT ON TOP

Plus the famous face cream that landed in last place.

What beauty insiders put on their own arms when they're the ones paying

Anyone who writes about beauty gets buried in free samples. Boxes of creams and oils stack up by the desk every week.

Very few of those jars and bottles ever make the trip home.

"The pricey jars go on my face," a beauty director I've known for years told me. "From the neck down, I need something I can afford to use every morning."

Mostly that means her arms and chest, which went crepey after menopause.

A skin care editor was blunter: "Crepey arms need a generous layer every day. If you wince each time you scoop that much out, the jar sits on the shelf and your arms look the same."

I thought about that for days, mostly because she's right.

It got me wondering what people who test skin care for a living buy with their own money, the stuff that goes on their arms and chest after a shower.

And what do they reach for when every sleeveless top they own has been shoved to the back of the closet?

So we tried every contender ourselves and ranked them, best first.

1. BEST OVERALL: LUMIÉ QUEEN OIL

Effectiveness: 94%

Texture: 96%

Price: $$

Overall: A

We ranked Lumié Queen Oil first, and it's the bottle we'd hand any friend who wants to improve the look of crepey arms, chest, décolletage, stomach and thighs after menopause.

It's a seaweed-infused body oil for women in the thick of menopause or already out the other side.

Inside you'll find hand-harvested Undaria seaweed (the wakame in miso soup), a blend of passion fruit, açaí, babassu and rice bran oils, and white lupin, a plant extract with clinical research behind it. Lumié doesn't publish a full ingredient list, and we wish it would.

A quick heads-up: Lumié is a much newer, smaller company than La Mer or La Prairie.

If the name is new to you, that's why.

The product page shows 1,738 verified reviews with an average of 4.9 out of 5. The brand says it has more than 30,000 customers so far.

The only discount Lumié offers is subscribe & save at 10% off, which brings a bottle from $59.99 down to $53.99, delivered every 2 weeks, and you can skip or pause anytime.

We used it every day after the shower, smoothing it onto damp arms, chest, thighs and stomach.

A few weeks in, crepey skin looked smoother and firmer.

WHY WE PUT LUMIÉ QUEEN OIL AT #1

It was made for menopausal skin, which is the whole reason this list exists.

Lumié's reasoning: menopause drains the skin's lipid barrier, and the brand calls that lipid loss the main driver of crepey skin after 40. The oil is made to sink in and help restore it.

Undaria seaweed tops up the moisture barrier and white lupin is there for firmness. The four oils keep skin soft.

It absorbs quickly and leaves your skin feeling like velvet.

Lumié hasn't published clinical results for the oil itself. The firming reports come from its own customer survey, where many buyers said their skin looked firmer within weeks.

Keep at it, and one morning you might pull on a tank top, look down and think, "Hang on, are those my arms?"

It's $59.99 a bottle with a 60-day no-questions-asked refund. If you plan to use it daily, subscribe & save takes 10% off.

Hiding your arms every summer? This is the bottle to buy.

2. La Mer The Body Crème

Effectiveness: 88%

Texture: 90%

Price: $$$

Overall: B+

The Body Crème is La Mer's rich, leave-on cream for extremely dry skin anywhere from the collarbone down. A 10 oz jar costs $330, and it contains fragrance.

The hero ingredient, per La Mer, is The Shaping Ferment, and the brand says its Miracle Broth goes into all of its body treatments. After one application, La Mer reports, 100% of 32 women with extremely dry skin showed improved skin texture, and legs looked 17% smoother in a group of 33.

La Mer earns #2 because it's a true body cream with published results behind it, though $330 is a lot for a jar you'd use on arms, chest and legs every day, and every result La Mer publishes comes from a single application.

3. La Prairie Skin Caviar Hydro Emulsion

Effectiveness: 84%

Texture: 92%

Price: $$$

Overall: B

Skin Caviar Hydro Emulsion is a lightweight face moisturizer that La Prairie calls line-effacing and firming. It's $210 for 30 ml or $430 for 70 ml.

The formula leans on caviar extract and La Prairie's Exclusive Cellular Complex, and the brand describes a light fluid that sinks in fast, good news if heavy creams bother you.

It ranks #3 because La Prairie shows its work: +38% skin firmness and +70% hydration, measured on 51 panelists over 8 weeks. That's the most solid firming data on this list, which is why a face-and-neck product still edges out the body oil below it. The limit here is geography. La Prairie's directions say face and neck and stop there, and at $430 for the bigger bottle it's priced like the face product it is. It contains fragrance, too.

4. Besque® Magic Body Oil

Effectiveness: 80%

Texture: 84%

Price: $$

Overall: B-

Besque's Magic Body Oil is the other body oil on this list. It comes scented or unscented, at $60 a bottle, a penny more than Lumié.

Besque says it uses seven cold-pressed oils and prints the full list. Almond oil is on it, so Besque warns off anyone with a nut allergy. Its 4.9 stars come from 23,000+ reviews, far more than Lumié has.

It slips to #4 on the fine print: the $51 subscription undercuts Lumié's $53.99 but locks you in for two billing cycles, with a fee to cancel early. Besque's written policy also says it does not accept returns, and its guarantee needs 60 days of use, then refunds one product minus a $17 fee.

5. Sisley Paris Phyto-Blanc La Nuit

Effectiveness: 62%

Texture: 86%

Price: $$$

Overall: C+

Phyto-Blanc La Nuit Overnight Brightening Cream is a Sisley Paris night cream for dark spots, dullness, uneven tone and dryness. A 50 ml (1.6 oz) jar costs $310.

The brand builds it around rainbow algae extract and its Phyto-Blanc Complex, so if sun spots are the first thing you notice in the mirror, this jar is aimed squarely at them, and Sisley says it hydrates, too.

The snag? Sisley made it for your face at night, as the final step after two other Phyto-Blanc products, and it makes no firming claim at all. The brand says nothing about arms, chest or crepey skin anywhere in its description. The scent comes from lavender and marjoram oils.

At $310 for 1.6 oz, you'd be paying face-cream money for a body-sized job. By Sisley's account it's a comfortable night cream with a rich, airy texture that melts in. For crepey arms and chest, fifth place is fair.

WHY LUMIÉ QUEEN OIL BEAT LA MER FOR THE TOP SPOT

We rubbed plenty of luxury jars and oils into our own arms for this ranking, and for the daily, all-over use crepey skin needs, Lumié Queen Oil is the best buy of the five at $59.99 a bottle.

For the record, La Mer's body cream costs $330 a jar, Sisley's night cream is $310 a jar, La Prairie wants $430 for a 70 ml bottle of its emulsion, and Besque's body oil is $60 a bottle.

Our reporter Helen Marsh, 58, helped put this ranking together and did the digging on what goes into Lumié's oil. We'll let her take it from here.

For most of my career, my face got the good stuff and my arms got whatever lotion was sitting by the sink, which is an embarrassing thing for a beauty reporter to admit.

After menopause, the skin on my upper arms went loose and crepey. It crinkled like tissue paper every time I reached for a high shelf.

A whole side of my closet turned into a museum of sleeveless dresses and tank tops. I'd look at them every morning and pull on something with sleeves.

Then my editor handed me this ranking.

My own arms were the whole reason I cared, so I started with the expensive jars and tried each of them on myself.

Pricing out a daily coat of the nicest ones from my shoulders down made my stomach drop.

Around then I had lunch with Judith, a former magazine colleague in her early 60s. She showed up sleeveless, with arms and a chest that looked noticeably better than I remembered.

I was so jealous I barely touched my salad.

By dessert I gave up playing it cool and asked what she was using, and she answered before I'd finished the question: Lumié Queen Oil.

Judith's arms were right there across the table, and that was all the convincing I needed.

I went home and pulled up Lumié's site before I'd even put my bag down.

Judith had mentioned the subscribe & save option, which knocks 10% off each bottle, so I set up a subscription that same night.

WHAT DOES LUMIÉ QUEEN OIL DO, EXACTLY?

When the box arrived, I opened it in the hallway and went straight to the shower.

While my skin was still damp, I smoothed the oil over my arms, chest and décolletage, then my stomach and thighs. The backs of my arms got a little extra, since that's where the crinkling bothered me most.

The hard part was waiting. Oils like this take weeks of daily use to show what they can do, so I kept at it and tried to leave the mirror alone.

While I waited, I did some homework on what was in that bottle.

The formula leans on three things: hand-harvested Undaria seaweed, white lupin, and a four-oil blend of açaí, babassu, rice bran and passion fruit.

Lumié's case is simple: after menopause the barrier that holds moisture in runs low, and this oil is built to soak in and help put it back.

LUMIÉ QUEEN OIL WAS MADE FOR SKIN LIKE MINE

By the time menopause was through with my arms, my wish list was short. I wanted moisture that stuck around and a firmer look, from something I could smooth on and then pull a silk blouse right over.

Lumié builds its oil around three groups of ingredients, and they line up with that list almost too neatly.

For moisture that lasts, Lumié uses Undaria seaweed plus a blend of four botanical oils. White lupin is in there for firmness. And those four oils soak in fast, so I can get dressed a few minutes after I rub it in.

WHAT'S IN THE BOTTLE I KEEP BY THE SHOWER?

My one gripe is that Lumié hasn't published a full ingredient list, so I'm going by what the brand names.

Here's everything Lumié names, and the job each one does:

UNDARIA SEAWEED
A hand-harvested seaweed you may know as wakame, full of amino acids, antioxidants and vitamins. Lumié puts it in to replenish the moisture barrier that wears thin after menopause.

WHITE LUPIN
This clinically studied plant extract is the firming ingredient. Lumié says it helps skin look firmer and more elastic, and that women who stick with it see tighter-looking arms, chest and thighs.

AÇAÍ OIL
One of the four oils in the botanical blend. Together, the four give skin deep moisture that stays put.

PASSION FRUIT OIL

Another of the four. They absorb quickly, and my arms don't feel greasy afterward.

BABASSU OIL

Babassu makes three. Once the whole blend has sunk in, it leaves skin looking radiant.

Rice bran oil makes four, and it's the last piece of the botanical blend.

And Lumié Queen Oil is dermatologist formulated, made with 100% natural ingredients, and contains no parabens or synthetic fragrance. It does have a light botanical scent, which fades once it sinks in.

A few weeks into using it daily after my shower, I lifted my arm to pin up my hair and caught the back of it in the mirror.

The skin there looked smoother and firmer, and the crepey look I'd been hiding under sleeves was a lot harder to spot.

My arms felt softer, too, and a sleeveless top is back in my rotation.

"The crepey texture on my arms got so much less noticeable that I dug a sleeveless top out of the back of my closet," says Helen.

I'm 63 and I've hidden my arms in cardigans for the last 10 summers. I can honestly say this oil changed my life. My arms look so much better, I actually wore a sleeveless dress last week for the first time in years.

I was seriously considering an expensive and scary procedure for my neck and décolletage. I decided to try this oil as a last resort, and I am so glad I did. The difference is real and visible.

Beyond the firming, which is amazing, this is the only thing that has ever kept my dry, sensitive skin comfortable all day long. No more tightness or itchy feeling by the afternoon.

For the first time in years, I don't hate my reflection. I used to immediately focus on the loose skin on my neck and it would put me in a sour mood. Now I actually look forward to my morning routine.
